aussie update problem

This has me stumped, I have two home PCs running licensed XP Pro. They share
an ADSL internet connection.

Desktop PC connects to Windows Update and downloads files no problems.

Until recently, Laptop was fine. However, NOW when it connects to Windows
Update after showing positive signs (Windows Update appears in IE Title) it
fails and I get a "Cannot find server" error message.

I've done some investigating and the laptop is connecting to Update on the
IP address:

65.54.249.254

I've tried clearing cache, connecting directly (i.e. non shared) and problem
remains.

Pinging the address gives DNS time outs (on laptop and desktop). Desktop PC
connects to Windows Update on IP 80.67.68.24 (no problem)

I've browsing straight to this URL on the laptop, but no luck.

I'm stuck, any help appreciated!

TIA

Windows Update stores it's update locations in the registry.
Look under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate

and if you are using a GPO:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\windows\WindowsUpdate

Look here and in the subkeys for your bogus IP address.
