I see numerous files like this in the WM message store. Dates are different
of course. I'm assuming these are backups that are written when folders are
compressed???? Is that correct? Are they ever deleted automatically or do I
need to clean them out every once in a while????

Exactly what folder do you find these in?
Are you sure they have the date as an extension?

WindowsMail.MSMessageStore is the data file where it stores all the data it
needs about the individual messages, which themselves are stored as
individual EML or NWS messages. As for cleaning them, wait for WinMail to
offer to compact them.

They are in "Windows Mail Store Data" folder. I found what they are. They
are backups created by the utility WM program named WMUtil.
