Windows XPHome /Roxio DVD burning

I've just started trying to use the built-in burning capability, but it
will not write to a DVD+RW, I get a message saying 'The CD is not a
writable disc or is full'. I can, however, burn a CD-RW. Does XP allow
DVD writing? I can't find anything in the Help section.
This all started when I had to re-install XPHome+SP1 after my system
collapsed after getting a boot sector virus. Before I re-installed I had
been using Roxio Easy CD Creator 6 Drag to disc to burn files with a
Pioneer 106 and reading those files on an LG8160B with no problems, also
copying DVDs and burning with Nero 6.0.0.15 then reading OK on the LG.
After I re-installed, I can no longer read DVDs in the LG reader, it
just fails to see that a disk is in the drive, yet if I put a DVD in the
LG drive and start up Power DVD, although it won't auto start, I can get
it to play by telling it to go the LG reader. Also, the LG will auto
play a CDR and RW.
The media I use is 01ne DVD+RW and Arita DVD+R. Like I say, these worked
just fine before the re-install but not now. Could this be a missing
driver perhaps? The LG 8160B presumably has a driver within XP, I don't
recall needing to install any others. I couldn't get Roxio to work
either, so I uninstalled it, now trying to use XP built in burning
Any suggestions on this please? It's making my teeth itch!
Thanks.

Does XP allow DVD writing?

no, Windows XP does not burn DVD's. The next version of Windows, right now
Codenamed: Longhorn will include DVD writing.
