Windows XP64

To my surprise I find that a number of software running on my old 32 bit
Windows XP do not want to install on Windows XP 64 running on amd opteron
processor, generating error message that 'the image file is valid but for
machine of a different type than the current machine'.

Microsoft claims almost full compatibility with 32 bit software but this is
not true.

I tried to get Microsoft's support but they cannot identify my WinXP64
product number nor product key. They scan instead my machine for hours.

Please let me know if you have similar experience with Microsoft or how to
get around

G'day Steve,

I had a similar issue with Win XP 64, and Microsoft sent me a free copy of
Win XP Pro 32.

I told Microsoft that their product wasn't providing the service in which I
purchased it for, and they need to replace it by law. They were very quick
to send me the new copy of Windows.

I hope this was helpful,

JAmes

This should go to the X64 group, but the answer is likely that those
32-bit programs are using 16-bit installers.
Microsoft claims almost full compatibility with 32 bit software but this is
not true.

But the problem is with 16-bit software, but 32-bit software.

Check with the manufacturers of the "32-bit" programs that won't
install for updates or patches. Surprisingly, a lot of 32-bit
applications still come with 16-bit Installers, which simply will not
work; WinXPx64 doesn't support any 16-bit processes.
