upgrading to XP64

I am running Windows XP 32 service pack 2 and all is working well. I have
been advised that as I have a dual core Intel computer I am not making full
use of the processors potential and should upgrade to XP64.
If I do will it be an upgrade only and will all my programs still work?
I would be willing to get a copy of 64 but don't want to chance messing up
my computer. any advice out there?

Whoever told you that doesn't really know what they are talking about.
XP 64 is clean install only, no upgrade path from 32-bit Windows.
Driver support for XP 64 is not very good and not all that many software
packages make full use of 64-bit technology. You are probably better
off staying with your current XP installation.

In addition to John John's comments is your processer a 64bit one? Just
because it's Duo Core doesn't mean it will run an x64 OS.

Also there is an XP x64 specific newsgroup.
