If you have another firewall you are happy with, I suggest you disable
the Windows firewall.
Generally it is recommended to use only one firewall.

It not ms that has to smooth things out. It's the software makers. They have
to adapt their programs to work correctly with sp2.

You'll find those with different points on view on this. Here's
mine: don't run two firewalls. You achieve no extra protection,
you incur the extra overhead of running two firewalls, and you
run the risk (probably small, but not zero) of conflicts between
them.

The Windows firewall monitors incoming traffic only. Almost any
third-party firewall will also monitor outbound traffic, stopping
rogue programs trying to call home, and is a better choice.

Wasn't there a rumor in SP2's inception that windows firewall
*would* monitor outbound traffic?
Was it just a rumor, or did MS consider it, then drop it?

Hey worried,

It looks like you really need to install SP2 because your SP1 is not
copying the links properly.

Hope SP2 can fix your current problem.

That's what I came to post saying BUT OUTLOOK 2003 is in that MS list
WITHOUT a link or comment and that is NOT acceptable.

The list Microsoft made is only OK because specifics on fixes.
If you are having specific issues related to Windows XP SP-2, do you
have the Service Pack installed for Outlook 2003?
I am not sure, but the fix is probably there since the version listed
is pre SP-1.

Otherwise it may be a non issue if you are not having problems.

I meant to say "The list Microsoft made is only OK because it lacks
specifics on fixes."

Sorry, I don't know; I'm not privy to what Microsoft considers.

Outlook 2003 works just fine with Service Pack 2 right out of the box.
Of course, I have taken charge of my own Internet Security by using an
up-to-date third-party firewall (Norton Personal Firewall 2004) and
know how do use it properly. I also keep my operating system updated,
and use a quality Anti-Virus product, and keep it updated with the
latest virus definitions.

I have not found a program which I use every day which will not work
with Service Pack 2 right out of the box. As far as I am concerned,
there is a lot of FUD going around about Service Pack 2.

The only ones who will have problems with SP2 are those who listen to
reactionaries like root and take him (her?) seriously, or who won't
spend the time necessary to learn how to use their computers,
operating systems, and programs.

I run Outlook 2003 here. There has been *no* difference in it
since installing SP2 11 days ago.

In other words, the only people who *won't* have problems
are the ones who don't need SP2. Or, to put it another
way, the ones most likely to have problems are the ones
who need it the most.
Also, you might want to look up "reactionary" and find out
what it means. Or do you mean that political and social
conservatives are also likely to have problems? Although
I would tend to agree, because those folks have a
tendency to be intellectually challenged, I doubt that
that's what you meant.

Ok, your right, ms does list some of it's own software, so they have to fix
that. FWIW - Outlook 2003 with sp1 works fine for me on xp pro sp2.

Mrs. Plethora, please don't decide what I said. I don't need you to
interpret my statement, nor does anyone else.

The installation of XP SP2 is a NON-ISSUE on modern machines. The
only ones who think it is an issue are those who have not installed
it, or those who have junky machines (who probably shouldnt even be
running XP in the first place), or people like the original OP in this
thread, who havent researched the matter for themselves, but just take
a statement by Microsoft out of context, and build FUD out of it.

Some people are going to decide an effort on Microsoft's part is
worthless, simply because they hate Microsoft, and for no other
reason. That is not Microsoft's fault. Microsoft has worked long and
hard to create a service pack which will work well for the great
majority of users.

In these forums, the whining voices of a few malcontents seems to
sound louder then the voices of reasonable men and women, simply
because their voices are so grating and irrational. Yet unstable
souls will listen to them in order to reinforce their own irrational
fears and hatreds of Microsoft. This is truly a shame.

When I installed XP SP2 on my machine, nothing untoward happened. The
sky did not turn dark, the ground did not fall out from under me, nor
did my machine make even the slightest whimper of complaint. The XP
SP2 installer simply did what it was designed to do -- upgrade my
operating system. But I prepared for the upgrade. I took the time to
install and run the Techincal Previews. I kept my HD clean. I kept
my Registry clean, to the best of my ability. I took control of my
own Internet safety by installing and using a third-party firewall and
anti-virus, and kept them up-to-date. I took the time to learn to use
these products. I took the time to learn to use Microsoft Windows
(I've been using Microsoft products since the '80s.) I didn't have a
big ego, and decide that I was so smart that I could just stick a CD
in the drive and automatically I would know everything right away. I
made mistakes, and learned from those mistakes. I had the help of
many other users, and my brother, who always provided me with a
machine which just worked as it should.

I also stuck my neck out. I took a chance that Microsoft had my best
interests at heart when they created SP2. I was not disappointed.

Phil;
You have Outlook 2003 SP-1?
That is not on the list.
You have SP-1 installed.
You will notice many on that link do not list the most recent update,
some do.
So if you are later than what is listed, yours does not apply.

Even without the updates, many report no issues at all.

This page could have been written better to clarify a little though.

Just for the record DONALD,
I didn't want to "build FUD out of it".
I just thought it good for everyone to see
that article.
It is still up to the individual
to download XP2,but the fact remains, that with all the
information coming forward,
one will be much better informed.
And even knowing my XP Home is old after 2 years,
some of us do not live in such splendor,to
afford all the newest utilities on the market.
That doesn't mean it can't be kept clean to run well.
Thank you for your input.

Hehe, you may have a point there,
it's a good thing I corrected it
and also got all the feedback, now it may
be easier for me to decide whether
to download it or not.

Yes I have ol2003 with sp1. Thanks for the info.
