who listen to reactionaries like root and take him (her?)
seriously, or who won't spend the time necessary to learn
how to use their computers, operating systems, and
programs.
Mrs. Plethora, please don't decide what I said. I don't need you to
interpret my statement, nor does anyone else.
The installation of XP SP2 is a NON-ISSUE on modern machines. The
only ones who think it is an issue are those who have not installed
it, or those who have junky machines (who probably shouldnt even be
running XP in the first place), or people like the original OP in this
thread, who havent researched the matter for themselves, but just take
a statement by Microsoft out of context, and build FUD out of it.
Some people are going to decide an effort on Microsoft's part is
worthless, simply because they hate Microsoft, and for no other
reason. That is not Microsoft's fault. Microsoft has worked long and
hard to create a service pack which will work well for the great
majority of users.
In these forums, the whining voices of a few malcontents seems to
sound louder then the voices of reasonable men and women, simply
because their voices are so grating and irrational. Yet unstable
souls will listen to them in order to reinforce their own irrational
fears and hatreds of Microsoft. This is truly a shame.
When I installed XP SP2 on my machine, nothing untoward happened. The
sky did not turn dark, the ground did not fall out from under me, nor
did my machine make even the slightest whimper of complaint. The XP
SP2 installer simply did what it was designed to do -- upgrade my
operating system. But I prepared for the upgrade. I took the time to
install and run the Techincal Previews. I kept my HD clean. I kept
my Registry clean, to the best of my ability. I took control of my
own Internet safety by installing and using a third-party firewall and
anti-virus, and kept them up-to-date. I took the time to learn to use
these products. I took the time to learn to use Microsoft Windows
(I've been using Microsoft products since the '80s.) I didn't have a
big ego, and decide that I was so smart that I could just stick a CD
in the drive and automatically I would know everything right away. I
made mistakes, and learned from those mistakes. I had the help of
many other users, and my brother, who always provided me with a
machine which just worked as it should.
I also stuck my neck out. I took a chance that Microsoft had my best
interests at heart when they created SP2. I was not disappointed.
