The key has to match the install media used. Retail keys work with retail
CDs. Example, if you but a retail CD, install on one system and then want
to install on a second --you can obtain a second retail key from MS to do
so. They have a link on their "Shop Microsoft" pages where you can purchase
extra key(s).
Most OEM CDs are tailor made for a specific brand and in many cases for a
specific model within that brand. If you lost the XP key that came with
your Gateway computer, it will not work with your friend's Dell CD. If your
other friend has a Gateway, chances are good that your key will not work
with his CDs especially if they have a different model.
