S & S VOLVO AND GMC TRUCKS

I heard that Windows XP will no longer be available in new computers that are
purchased. We are a GM Dealer and there are programs that will not work with
Vista. If we have to purchase a new computer in the future is there a way of
backing a computer back down to Windows XP without the software. All our
computers were preloaded with XP when we purchased them so we do not have a
master disc with XP on it. Could you please give us more info on this subject
..

1. Discuss this with whoever is making your proprietary software. Find out
about upgrades, patches, workarounds, timetables for when they will support
Vista.

2. Consider purchasing some extra computers running XP and putting them on
the shelf. Consider purchasing some extra retail copies of XP and putting
them on the shelf.

If the computers you purchased had the OEM version of XP installed,
legally, you are not allowed to install the operating system on
another machine. Your computers should have come with some sort of a
recovery CD in event of failure. You should contact your computer
supplier for a better understanding of your situation.
 
Hi Jill,

'Downgrading' to WindowsXP may not be a possibility if the new hardware
you buy doesn't have driver support for WindowsXP.

The simplest solution at this point (until your proprietary software
vendor updates their product) would be to run a virtual machine.

Microsoft has a free product called VirtualPC 2007. You simply create a
VM on the WindowsVista machine and install WindowsXP. The only problem
with this approach is the limited USB support (basically only storage
devices that have been connected before the VM is run and then
connected to as a network drive), and limited graphics capabilities.

I have been using VirtualPC for a number of years and have been pleased
with it. If you must have USB support, you can look at VirtualBox or
VMPlayer.
