I put in windows xp on my son's computer then on mine.
when I go to activate the product it says it is already
activated but the countdown in days continues. I just
realized I couldn't use the same software on both even
though I paid for it. Can I buy xp upgrade and install on
mine, or do I need to rebuy the entire software.

You paid for one machine. You should be able to buy the upgrade, check
the box for the requirements.

Since you have already gone to XP, it might be a problem getting things
straightened out. There are so many factors in play now, like what prior
version(s) you have on your machine, how you installed the XP on your
machine etc. that it would be hard to tell.

Hopefully someone better versed with all the complexities can give you
more guidance.
