Windows XP won't shut down

Windows XP hangs after going through most of the shutdown process. It gets to
the last section and then freezes. Restarting in diagnostic mode produces the
same results. Event log refers to "ParVdm" and says "Unable to get device
object pointer for port object." Have recently installed a Belkin High Speed
USB 2.0 upgrade kit.

Any suggestions?
