Windows XP Won't Hide Files

Hi Guys,

I'm hoping that you can help with a rather persistent and annoying
problem.

OS = Windows XP Home (SP2)

The problem is that XP will not retain the setting for hiding hidden files
and folders. If you change the setting so that hidden files and folders
are _not_ visible the change is not retained.
On a system reboot the system returns to a state where hidden files and
folders _are_ visible, sometimes this setting will change even without a
reboot (ie during the course of a normally logged in session).

We have attempted to make this change from the only account which is set
up on the system (this account _does_ have Administrator rights), we have
tried making the account from the default Admin account in Safe Mode, we
have tried editing the registry entry that governs this setting from
within regedit - none of the changes that we make will persist and Windows
always defaults back to showing hidden files and folders.

No "tweaking" software has been installed (no TweakXP or similar) and the
user is running Spybot and Adaware (both of which have been run with the
latest updates without anything being found) and the Windows firewall.

If anybody has any suggestions then I would be grateful to hear them, if
you need any further information then please let me know.

Aplogies for the cross posting, I wasn't sure which was the best group for
this post.

Thanks again.

Catsworth,
Try this way to see if it will solve your problem. Start/Control
Panel/double click "Folder Options" to open it/click the "View"
Tab/scroll down and check mark BOTH 1. Do not show hidden files and
folders. 2. Hide protected operating system files (Recommended). They go
together
