My son's computer is running XP. Last night during Xmas
Eve we went to restart it and it hung up. Would not get
pass the logo. It just hangs there and never fully boots
up. I do not want to do a system restore as he has never
backed anything up. Is there a way to save his files and
pictures to a disk before doing a full system restore?
Thanks

do a safe boot, restart the system, as soon as the BIO note pops up
(initial start) start tapping the F8 key every couple of seconds. You
should be presented with black and white menu with several boot options.
Select the safe boot. This loads essential drivers for WINXP to load up
and give access to everything. Here also, if you son installed something
that caused this problem, now is the chance to uninstall it, restart and
see if this boot issue goes away.

If Doug's suggestion worked, be sure you create an
emegency boot disk that you will need if this happens
again.
