windows xp will not start

I have a gateway with windows xp sp2 when I turn my computer on windows tries
to start but goes to a black and white screen with options safe mode or start
windows normally I tried both did not work if I leave computer on this keeps
repeating

Try the option on that screen for "Last Known Good Configuration"
if no help, try booting to Safe Mode with Command Prompt, to use this
command shown in this article.

Most Gateway machines are only supplied with a "restore to factory defaults'
that would lose all your other data.
