Windows XP will not start

I'm running Windows XP Home with all the current updates. I have up to
date virus scan as well. 2 days ago while using my PC (using Microsoft
Word if I remember correctly) I received an error that the file
c:\windows\system\vgaoem.fon was missing or corrupt and that windows
had to shut down. I now get this error every time and Windows will not
start. I tried to extract this file from my Windows XP disc per the
instructions on the Microsoft web page (recovery console) but I was
given an access denied error when I tried to expand it. Any ideas as
to what I need to do? I'm hoping for something short of a total
reinstall.

To repair all system files, go to Start/Run, and type: SFC /SCANNOW

I'm having the exact same problem as Rodney. I'm using a Dell Lattitude and
called Dell for support with this issue. Dell told me I would have to
re-install XP and would loose everything on my hard drive (unless I first
wanted to send it to an emergency hard drive recovery company). Maybe I'm in
denial, but there must be some way to try and recover this.

How do I follow Mark's suggestion if I can't even get to the start menu?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Dell systems include the standard MS XP setup disk. You should try a Repair, or 'upgrade' setup.

If you run an XP "Upgrade"setup, from the original, or "Gold" version of the setup CD, and you have SP2 installed, it might go into
a setup loop, and you could lose your install. Uninstall SP2, BEFORE you Upgrade setup from CD (that lacks sp2 on it.)
