I have been receiving an error: A problem has been dedected and windows has
been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. I booted the XP cd that I
received with my dell. When I booted the cd, another error appeared stating
"FTDISK.SYS is corrupted. What can I do to correct? HELP!!

Please post the error code (which begins with 0x000...) and the name of
the error (which LOOKS_LIKE_THIS) in the blue screen.

Whenever you find yourself in serious trouble with a computer, it's
always a good idea to seek advice first, rather than acting on your own.
Don't ask why I know this.

you might try booting up with any winxp
cd and initiating the repair option to run
the recovery console.

then at the disk prompt run the following
commands:

chkdsk /p
fixboot
fixmbr

then exit and remove cd.

-------------------
with the fixmbr you will get some warnings
pop up. however, you can dismiss them
and proceed to fix the master boot record.

Does the BIOS recognise the hard drive?

Background information on Stop error code

0x000000ED: UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
The kernel mode I/O subsystem attempted to mount the boot volume and it
failed. This error also might occur during an upgrade to Win XP on
systems that use higher throughput ATA disks or controllers with
incorrect cabling. In some cases, your system might appear to work
normally after you restart.

most of the time, the computer
is set to boot directly from the
hard disk.

but when the hard disk is not
bootable, then you need to
reset the computer to boot
from the cd.

to do this you would need to
access the "bios" for your
computer.

double check you computer manual
to find which key is required to be
held down as soon as you press the
power button on your computer.

sometimes it is either the f2 key or
the del key which will then open
up the bios setup menu.

in it you will find a setting pertaining
to booting.

so select cd as the first/initial boot
device, if it is not set at this time.

if your computer is already set to
boot from the cd "or" you just made
the adjustment to boot with the cd,

then insert your windows xp cd in
the drive and restart your computer.

when the setup menu appears press
"r" for repair to launch the recovery
console.
