Windows XP will not start up

Yesterday afternoon, I turned on my computer. A message
came up saying that the computer was improperly shut down
and asked me to choose what mode to start Windows in
(Safe, Safe with networking, Normal, etc.) I tried each
of them, to no avail. It kept returning to the same
screen.

I'm not sure what the problem is and thought I would try
asking here. Any ideas?
