Windows XP will not restart after updates.

I accepted and installed some MS updates this morning and can't get
WindowsXP to start.

I see the - Checking file system on C:
The type of the file system is FAT32.
One of your discs needs to be checked for consistency,...ect.
I let it check to 100%.
I see - Windows has checked the file system and found no problems.

After a few minutes on the HD light flashing the computer re-boots.

I now see - We apologize for the incovenience,...ect.

I choose Safe Mode. This generates a screen full of drivers that read like
this - multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partion(1)\windows\system32\Drivers\ag0440.sys
The HD light flashes.

After 10 minutes of this I push the reset button.

I've choosen Safe Mode with Command Prompt and Safe Mode with Networking
with the same result.

I push reset. I get - Checking file system on C... again. I let it check
to 100%. It fnishes telling me - Windows checked the file system and found
no problems. The HD light flashes for a few minutes then the computer
re-boots itself.

I choose - Last Known Good Configuration. I get - Checking file system on C
....again. I let it check to 100%. No problems. HD light flashes. Computer
re-boots.

I choose - Start Windows Normally. I get - Checking file system on C
...again. I let it check to 100%. HD light flashes for a few minutes and
computer re-boots itself.

That's all the options I am presented with. What's next? Thanks.

I too had the same problems and messages as you after installing the July
updates today. They were KB914388, KB916595, KB917159 and Malicious Software
Removal Tool KB890830. Okay, so I don't know which one screwed the pooch.
But after restarting the PC like Windows Update said, I was stuck on the
Windows XP splash screen while starting. Was not able to boot in to any of
the safe modes, but I found one that worked! Try the "Enable Boot Logging"
option. For whatever reason, this got me into Windows and I used System
Restore to go back one day. I have rebooted a couple of times to make sure
and I am back up and running now. I am now leary of installing future
updates. The mere thought of reinstalling Windows to fix this made me quite
upset and angry!

Good Luck!
