I encountered a problem after my last restart on Friday. My computer seems
likes its loading fine but I do not get access to any icons, the task bar or
the start menu. The only operation I have is through the Task Manager. I have
a Dell using XP Home edition.

I have tried many things to fix the problem, similar to many entries on
here. I first tried to start it in safe mode, no changes.

I uninstalled SP2, still same problem after restart.

I used the chkdsk function to make sure my hard drive was working,
everything checked out fine.

I tried the system restore at a few various points and still same problem.

I performed an in place repair with the CD I received with my computer,
still nothing.

Any help in this matter would be appreciated. I would like to retrieve some
data from the hard drive before having to do a clean install if possible.

Thanks,

I have tried the suggested items still nothing. One thing I forgot to
mention, "explorer.exe" never closes on its own. I have to shut it down.

I tried renaming "explorer.exe" to "explorero.exe". After I close
explorer.exe and run the copied version"explorero.exe immediately my desktop
appears in a window and I am able to get to everything on my computer. But I
can not copy items to a CD or flashdrive only to the A drive.

If I don't close "explorero.exe" before restart I get a blue screen
indicating errors, I am assuming this is because I didn 't change it anywhere
to look for the new file name.

Any more help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
