Windows XP will not install

Dave

I am trying to upgrade Windows 98se to Windows XP Home
with SP1 and I keep getting error messages then it aborts
the install telling me it can can not continue contact
tech support, but there is no way to contact Microsoft
tech support, it took me an hour of search the Tech net,
and Knowledge base to get to here.

During the installation, WinXP Home reports mfc42.dll can
not be found in the /I386 directory when I press to
cancel that, it then reports migisol.exe not found in the
same dir, so I cancel that, and it goes on for a few
minutes till it gives the error 5CFFF58h then tells me it
has to stop and I have to contact Microsoft tech support
it just fails to tell me how.

Suggestions??????

Please help, I have installed Windows XP Pro on my
laptop, and I have installed Windows XP on my wifes
system no problem, and yes each one is a individuale disc
complete with its own number etc, purchased at different
times from different stores even.

Since you are upgrading Win 98 onto a "legacy" PC, recommend you first
check the compatibilty of that machine with tools at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/compatibility/default.asp. Not all
machines of Win 98 vintage can run XP.

However, now that you've destroyed Win 98 OS, I'm not sure how you do
that....

You are doing a "clean" install?

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Greetings --

Problems copying files or corrupted files during installation
are most often caused by defective or sub-standard hardware; in order
of likelihood, either RAM, the hard drive, or the motherboard. On
much less frequent occasions, a bad CD or defective CD drive can also
cause this.

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:
(http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective or substandard
hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will
still support Win9x.
