I'm new to XP and want to know if there's a place where I can download
various wallpapers for FREE?

Google Is Your Friend(tm). Put in the search term "free desktop
wallpaper" without the quotes and see all the links that come up!

Don't a number of wallpapers come with viruses and spyware? Or is that
just screensavers. (I'm not the original poster.)
 
Wallpaper is just an image, but a screensaver is a program. So a
screensaver could possible be doing something else while it's showing
a nifty picture on your screen. But a wallpaper, being an only an
image (usually a bmp file) doesn't execute and so can't do anything.
