Windows XP upgrading

I am trying to upgrade from Windows 98 version 2 to XP
Home edition. My computer is an Acer Travelmate 340
laptop. The upgrade process is normal until 17 minutes
from completion, when "registering components" occurs. The
computer freezes at this point, and the new operating
system has to be uninstalled, and returned to W98. Any
suggestions??

Is the computer and ALL software fully compatible with Windows XP?

Uninstall everything Upgrade Advisor has issues with whether it is
compatible with Windows XP or not.

Disable all unnecessary applications including antivirus, spam tools,
download accelerators etc.

An Acer is one of the MOST proprietary PCs one can get. I'd never try an
upgrade on one of those beasts. Try a fresh install. Then cross your
fingers and hope that you can find the drivers you need for their
extremely proprietary internal parts.
