Usually no. However, if the upgrade fails for some reason you may no
longer be able to run any Windows installation on this computer unless
you clean-install Windows ME or Windows XP afterwards. Therefore you
may want to backup as much data as possible before you start.

Data is normally safe during upgrade.
However it is always a good idea to have back-ups of important data
just in case.
