I have just upgraded to the XP2 (I think service pack 2) and everyting seems
to be running SSSLLLOOOOOWWWW. Help. Parituclarly Internet Explorer and
Outlook. Does anyone have any suggetions?

Barb,
If you mean that you have Windows XP and you installed Service Pack 2 that
is one thing. If you mean you have upgraded your former operating system
(say Windows 98) to Windows XP (Home Edition or Pro) Service Pack 2, that is
something entirely different.

If the former, there are steps you should take to prepare your machine for
the installation of SP 2. These are outlined on the Windows Update website.

If the latter, keep in mind that not all machines are capable of running
Windows XP.

Barb, what did you upgrade from? A prior version of windows like 98 or
an earlier Service Pack of XP. BTW there is no XP2. There is XP with
Service Pack 2. To determine if that is what you have installed click
on Start, then run. Type in winver. It should say Service Pack 2.

Depending on your situation the slowness can be do to a number of
issues. If you did do an uprgrade within XP to SP2, how long has it
been? It can take several days and 3 or 4 reboots for it to speed up.
First defrag. The boot prefetch will kick in after the 3 rd reboot. It
takes several days for the prefetch folder to be rebuilt. And the in
built optimization kicks in every 3 days. After that defrag again. If
the system is still slow after some days try some clean boot
troubleshooting to see what may be hanging up on startup. A program may
need to be uninstalled / reinstalled:

How fast is the CPU speed of your computer and how much RAM does it
have installed.

The "minimum requirements" published by Microsoft for Windows XP are
somewhat overly optimistic, to put it politely, and if your computer's
specs are anywhere near these values then you need to seriously
consider upgrading the hardware.

This is especially true with regard to RAM, where 128 mb of RAM is
woefully inadequate for anything but the fastest CPUs and then only if
the computer is not used for any really demanding applications.

Good luck

Most regard 512MB of RAM to be ideal UNLESS the user is heavily into
graphics or other resource hogs then at least double that (1.24GB)

XP can be quite usable with as little as 256 mb for many users,
especially if all they are doing is email and a bit of web surfing.

More RAM does improve these systems, but the benefits, for this group
of users anyway, are not that dramatic.

My own system has 768 mb and I am seriously considering going to 1 gb,
but I do quite a bit more than just email and web-surfing.
