i'm trying to run an xp upgrade i bought. it will not run.
in the beginning i get the message: "the language of this
installation differs from the one you are installing. The
option to upgrade will not be available."

Is there any solution to this?

You need Windows XP in the same language version as
the Windows operating system you wish to upgrade over.
