Windows XP Upgrade Installation

I hope that someone can help me with this. I'm at the
end of my proverbial rope.

I am trying to upgrade to XP from ME on a Sony Vaio. The
installation gets to the point where it is completed and
moves on to 'Finalizing Installation' - 'Upgrading
Program and System Settings' - 'Setup will complete in
approximately 30 minutes'.

This is the point at which it hangs. Even though the
process indicator in the bottom right corner indicates it
is running and the message loop about the wonders of
Windows XP is still scrolling - it is not processing.
The only way out of this is to power the system down and
back up. When the system comes back up it automatically
restarts the XP installation. Pressing F5 when bringing
it up no longer has any option to allow me to go back to
ME or do anything that doesn't result in the continuation
of this constant loop.

If someone has a magic wand that may help me I would
greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance

Did you update & run the upgrade advisor? If yes, did you follow all it
said to do prior to upgrading? XP just doesn't like installing on some
hardware, and won't install until you figure out what is doesn't like, and
replace it.

Thank you for your quick reply - I will check that out.

Would you know how to get out of the loop I described in
order to be able to un-install XP. I can't find any
method on my own.

Thanks again

Unfortunately no. The only thing I can really think of trying is to open up
your computer and take out every piece of hardware that is absolutely
unessential to the install of XP and try to continue on with the XP install.
Other than that, it is probably time to get your backups ready and format &
reinstall, because I believe the XP install has already packed up your old
ME, and you cannot get it back until you get XP to install fully. Don't you
hate Catch 22's?!

Maybe somebody else knows of something I don't. I hope so for your sake,
because right know you are kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Good Luck!
