It's not my experience. I have used upgrade versions to install on new,
virgin hard disks. As others have stated you do need to supply proof of
ownership of a qualifying upgradable product.
No, that's not correct. If you use an Upgrade version, you need to own a
previous qualifying version. If you're doing an upgrade with that Upgrade
version, the previous version will be found on your drive.
If you're doing a clean installation and the previous version is not on the
drive, then you will by prompted to insert its CD as proof of ownership.
Only in that second scenario do you get such a message.
