Windows XP Updates

I recently had to re-install Windows XP and since then I'm having trouble
installing updates. I have automatic updates turned on but when I get the
icon shield noting I have updates ready to install when I select to install,
it appears they are installing but after I get a window saying saing "Some
updates could not be installed" the number that could not be installed is the
number of updates it found.
I also have other programs that can't tell I'm connected to the Internet
(ie; virus updates, network magic, etc.) I'm using wireless broadband
(Linksys) and can navigate the Internet fine but, like I said, programs that
need to update cannot tell I'm connected.

Any help would be appreciated.

Network magic requires that it can talk to your router, if you have plugged
the cable from the internet into the wrong connection in to your router, you
will be able to access the internet, but network magic will not, nor will it
be able to communicate with your router, I know this by experience, a few
weeks ago I installed a new router with NM and I was stumped when I could
access the internet but not talk to my router, anyway check your cable ensure
it's plugged into the correct connection on your router, mine embarrassingly
enough is marked (internet)

It if's not marked "internet" it should be marked WAN (wide area network).

Thanks Patty, I guess I should have explained, I uninstalled network magic on
the laptop in question and still have the problem. I do have nm on two other
PC's in the house with no problems.
