Windows XP Updates

I have downloaded and installed only those Windows Updates
that I felt I required. This meant leaving some Critical
Updates uninstalled because I didn't feel they were
necessary for the way I use my PC.

Is it safe to install those updates I have missed and do
they have to be installed in the order they were released
by Microsoft? In other words, do I have to install a
Security Update for Internet Explorer released in June
2003 before the Security Update for Internet Explorer
released in September?

Also, could I just get a disk with SP1 on it and install
that over the updates I have already installed?
