Windows XP updates fail

My mom had some work done on her computer where she had her hard drive
reformated, the tech pul an illegal copy of XP on (4 months ago) I came home
from out of state and put a legal copy on. Amd of course there was 97
updates, I downloaded them without an yissues but they will not install to
the computer.

so if anyone has any thoughts please let me know
