Windows XP update problems

After I download updates my settings change and when I
access my email my incoming mail server cannot be found
and my internet browser is extremely slow. If I use
restore to an earlier date it fixes things up.

What is the deal of changing the date to get to the top of the list? Bad

Start > Run >type sfc\ scannow > ok
