Windows XP unable to shut down program "Onscreen Display Window"

Is anyone familiar with the program "Onscreen Display Window"? I never knew
that existed untile it began to interfere with normal computer shutdown. My
failed attempts to correct the defect started with a complete spyware and
virus scan including checking the hard drive for defects and finally
defragmenting the hard drive. After defraging I used F8 to get to diagnostic
startup and tried restoring to the last time that the system worked properly.
Unsuccessful, I moved on to the System Restore program, trying various
restore points including starting System Restore in Safe Mode. Each attempt
at system restore resulted in a message stating that the restore could not be
completed for the point selected and that no changes were made to the system.
Presently the only way that I can shut down is to disconnect power. Does
anyone have any ideas?

I have a similar problem in that I can`t seem to log off.The only way I can
shut down is by switching to another user and shutting down from there,which
works perfectly!?!?.Perhaps if you created another user,you would be able to
close down.I know this doesn`t solve your problem but at least you could shut
down.

I have been researching the problem since I posted the question. I'm using
an HP Laptop. I had visited the HP total help site and out of curiosity I
ran some of the diagnostic programs on the site intended to verify proper
operation of hardware and software. Some event on the site modified, without
notification, the registry. The modification caused an HP utility program
(part of OEM original software configuration) to run in two areas of memory.
The programs were conflicting with each other on shut down. I resolved the
problem by first running the computer in safe mode and noticing that there
was no problem with shutdown. I then used msconfig in diagnostic mode to
discover the offending program. I then used regedit to modify the registry
thus correcting the defect. After the exercise, I reviewed the program,
decided that it was a stupid worthless utility and removed it from the
computer. I also learned not to trust HP. I contacted their tech support
and explained the situation, their contact person (who could barely
communicate in english) insisted that their site did not cause the problem
and since my computer was no longer under warranty wanted me to pay for for
tech service.
