Windows XP troubles

I just downloaded a patch for my Windows media player,
after it installs it asked me to reboot. I rebooted, but
now whenever I get past the Windows XP screen it goes to a
black screen and my hard drive light stays on. I left it
for 2 hours like this just in case, but it still does the
black screen. Any suggestions as to the cause and remedy
to this problem?
 
I've had problems with windows completing the startup
after the login screen if I leave any DVDs in my
machine. It will hang forever unless I eject the DVD
from the system - then it continues merrily on it's way.
