Black screen when playing video and locks up

Recently, anytime I try to play any video, my screen will go black and I can
hear the audio. When the video is through, the screen stays black. I have to
reboot the computer.
I have:
WinXP Pro Ver 20002 Service Pack 2 with all the latest updates
Windows Media Player Ver 10.00.00.3802

If you are trying to play an AVI file, then you must have the correct codecs
installed on your PC. Is this an AVI file that you are trying to play?
