problems replaying of streaming video

Hi,

A friend has WinXP Home on a 2 GHz laptop, fully updated with the
exception of WMP. The problem is that when streaming video is being
watched, no matter the browser, we do hear the audio, but the video gets
somehow corrupted. We start with the video roughly half the normal size,
and a quality like the speed is too fast. When we enlarge the video to
fullscreen, we either get nothing (black screen) or full screen but the
mousecursor leaves a black-blocked tail. Switching back to standard
size, it goes entirely black. Audio keeps playing normally.
During the upgrade, I installed WMP11, but then I couldn't get streaming
started at all, so I downgraded back to 9.
The problem is not due to either CPU speed or connection speed, since my
own Win2k is on a computer with 1 GHz and the same connection speed,
playing the streaming video without any problem.

Any help (hints/suggestions) is appreciated.
