Windows XP to Windows Me Networking

Hi folks.

I have, 1 x XP SP2 Home Edition machine(PC1), 1 x Me
machine(PC2), 1 x 4 port hub, 1 x Dial up phone line
connect to XP SP2 machine.
Since upgrading to windows XP SP2 Home Edition on PC1 my
network has not been functioning, it worked perfectly for
the network but now every game I buy needs XP, hence the
upgrade(The Me machine needs replacing as it's to old -
read to slow - to upgrade). I've gone through the Network
troubleshooter, I've run every check I can think of on
the settings, I even rang microsoft and spent a pretty
penny on the phone bill while the guy tried everything I
already had to try and fix the problem. Now down to
details :-

PC1 can see in "My Network places"->"View workgroup
Computers" both machine PC1 and PC2 but when it tries to
access PC2:

"\\Pc2 is not accessible. You might not have permission
to use this network resource. Contact the administrator
of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found."

PC2 does NOT show PC1 but it does show itself in Network
neighbourhood.

Also I cannot ping either machine from the other!?!

As PC2 worked find when I had WinMe on PC1 I assume it is
a problem with PC1's networking settings. I even did a
complete reinstallation of the network to no avail.

Please, this seems not to be an isolated case so can
someone from microsoft please look at this problem,
meanwhile I'm a user with a net-work that doesn't comply
to its name.(It don't work folks!)

Alan,

Microsoft employees are not always here, so you may have to rely
on peer-to-peer help.

Please have a look at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm and
also at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm for service pack 2
related issues.

I've been doing some serious surfing - I seem to be the
only person who didn't know that although some of the
updates on Windows update have "(SP2)" in their names
they are not actually part of SP2. SP2 is due for
release on 25/08/2004 (for americans that's 08/25/2004) -
go figure.

And point of note, this wasn't something I found on the
Microsoft site but on the BTinternet site - Microsoft
seem to be being very close mouthed about the subject of
a release date, at least I spent the last 2 hours looking
at various SP2 related pages and I didn't see a date once.

Needless to say, although my PC is as uptodate as I can
make it through Windows Update it is still SP1a not SP2.

Just thought I'd put that in as everyone else seems to
think that they already have it, if this is truly the
case - how?

I hate to point this out but most microsoft patches are
aimed at protecting your computer if you visit a rogue
website, but these only get written after many people
have been effected. You may be perfectly legit, and I may
just be paranoid. If anyone knows a way to prove the
trustworthyness of a site I would be most appreciative,
till then I'll hold fire on visiting. Cheers for the
thought though.

Don't worry too much. Web browsing is not very dangerous.
Everybody does it.

You can look at the home page first, at www.michna.com. It is my
personal site. It bears my name. Perhaps this conveys a little
bit of trust.

Alan,

Service Pack 2 was released to MSDN subscribers, of which I am
one.

Works well so far, after I understood some tricky points of the
firewall. See http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm for details.
