I recently installed windows XP pro, and all relevant
updates. Shortly after this (approximately 3 hours
usage), I had reboot the computer and the theme defaulted
to "windows classic." I went to the display properties
menu and changed the theme to windows XP. At this point
several features turned solid black. I tried to switch
back to "windows classic" and at that point all features
turned solid black save for on screen icons. A this point
the computer was essentially unusable. Upon restarting in
safe mode I found no themes (neither windows xp or windows
classic available to switch too). I opted to reinstall
windows.
Now a week later, the same problem seems to have occured:
Windows spontaneously loaded into classic theme. In the
Display Properties menu merely highlighting the Windows XP
theme causes corruption in the preview pane.
Internet research yielded this posting:

This person seems to think the fault is with windows
update. Any ideas to fix this short of reinstalling
windows?
