Windows XP Taskbar problem

How, I do not know, but the taskbar does not show the current programmes that
is running. I do not know whether I switched it off in some way or if there
is a problem with my windows registry or WHAT? If I want to switch to a
different programme, I have to use the task manager to do so. Is there any
way that I can set the tasbar to show the information as per default again?
