using win xp

how is it possible to hide icons from the taskbar.

i'm ot interested in unistalling or using msconfig. i'm looking for a
proper way to hide any icon. be it a windows security udpate icon or a
'connected icon' or a volume control or a norton ghost icon.

THe cloest I found was a program called Taskbar Hide. But it's got a
nasty Gui and chagnes aren't being saved for next time windodws
restarts. so, any other ideas?

You don't need other software to do this in XP :)

Right click a blank spot near the icons and choose properties. On the
Taskbar tab click customize. In the new window if you select one of the
current items you will discover a dropdown that will give you some
choices like Always Hide, Hide when inactive etc.
