Windows XP Task Manager disappears

Help... When I press Alt/Ctrl/Del to bring up the Task
Manager, it briefly comes up on the screen for a split
second and then disappears. I then go to the task bar and
the the icon disappears when I try to click on it. This
also happens when I try clicking onto the Task Manager
button. Can't find any info on this in Windows XP Help or
anything on the subject in the online support.

What do I need to do so I can get the Task manager tostay
up on my desktop so I can use.
