Windows XP takes for EVER to shut down

Windows XP takes for ever to shut down when connected to the domain. For that
matter so do our servers, but, I digress.
Is there a generic reason why computers on a domain take for ever to shut
down? I can take a brand new, out of the box laptop running Windows XP and it
shuts down quickly when you tell it to do so.
After being on our domain for a short period of time, it then takes quite a
long time for the laptop to power down. The HDD just grinds and grinds and
finally the unit will shut down.
I have some active log off scripts but they are only small batch files, and
the "Running logoff scripts" window goes away promptly, seeming to indicate
that this is not an area of contention.
I also have folder redirection going for some users, but not all of them,
yet all of the laptops are loath to shut down when connected to the domain.
