Windows XP startup problem.

One of my Windows XP Pro SP2 computers wont start up in the mornings when its
turned on. The USB mouse will turn off and the monitor will go into stand-by
before Windows can load but the computer is still running and the PS/2
keyboard lights are still on. When I turn off the computer then turn it back
on, it starts back up normally. There were no recent hardware or software
changes and I tried restoring everything back to the day it worked fine but
that didnt work. Any ideas will be appreciated.

Firstly, try updating the BIOS if possible, it could be a simple ACPI/APM
problem. You may also wish to turn off APM in the BIOS and just do APM within
Windows.

It could also be a hardware issue or some conflicting device however, please
try the above solution first and get back and tell us how it went.

Many thanks!

Try non-usb devices.

Thanks for your replies.

I updated the BIOS and used non USB devices, nothing helped. I also updated
the video and USB controller drivers and increased the video buffer to 8MB
from 1MB.

Any other suggestions will be appreciated.

Were you able to put the computer into standby mode before? Did it work?
What was the last thing you did when this problem occured?

The other thing I can suggest is that - can you successfully put the
computer in hibernation mode? Does it come out of it fine?

Other than this I think that either the computer somehow does not support it
(but as you said you updated the BIOS) or the profile (HAL?) could be
corrupted or something similar.

Tried a repair installation? :)

We never use standby or hibernation but when I put it in standby earlier
today, it didn't came back, I had to press and hold the power button to shut
it off.

Hi there.
Right, so you are saying that you never use standby mode? Well, disable it
in the power management properties within Windows, and in the BIOS if you
have APM enabled.

It sounds like your motherboard/BIOS does not support APM fully. Simply
disable the power management in Windows which is set to standby/hibernate
after a specific time to "Never" and apply the changes.

:) Hope it helps!
