I have a friend who wants to install the service packs on an xp computer and
he does not have a Internet connection what so ever. This computer is
strictly a home computer with non-profit files on it. The question is does
this computer need to follow the same guide lines for installing xp2 if this
computer has never been connected to the internet. With no connection to the
internet this computer does not have virus and anti-spam application so does
xp2 still need to go step by step per the instructions prior to installation.
Thank in advance.

Since you have access to the internet, you can order the free SP2 CD for
them. That way, they will always have the CD in case of re-installing.

You can order it from Microsoft ... and it's free.
If you haven't, you should order one for yourself as well.

The question was not about ordering a CD from Microsoft. I have one that he
is going to use, the question was does he need to follow the same guide lines
for instaling sp2 since he does not have an internet connection.

I never install SP while connected to the Internet if that's the
guideline you're referring to.

No, No, No. You read the question wrong. The Computer in question DOES NOT
HAVE INTERNET. Sorry for the caps but, it is so I can get your attention to
the real question at hand. Do I need to follow the same step by step
installation guide lines for installing SP2 since there is NO anti-virus
application, NO anti-spyware application, and NO Internet connection on this
computer. Thanks

Installing SP2 is pretty straight-forward. Just run the
~280 MB compressed file or Update.exe from the SP2's update
folder. Everything else is automatic, more or less.

If your question relates to the firewall that is updated with
SP2, it is not necessary to turn it on since the computer does
not connect to the outside. But if the computer is networked
to other computers locally, then do a determination on whether
or not a local firewall is needed.

As for anti-virus, my rule is to run it at all times since
malware can be imported by means other than the Internet, such
as transferring an infected file from any source.

Hope this addresses your issues. A little guessing involved.

What guidelines are you talking about?

Thanks to Ghostrider and Bob I for the reply. Since the other computer does
not have spyware or virus application, I did not think that this applied. I
didn't want to install these application on a computer just to put SP2 on it.
Thanks for the information which I think answered my question. Thank You.

No problem. To install SP2, it's *better* not to be connected to the
Internet.

Do this:

1. Clean up the computer of any temp files, etc.

2. Do a check disk

3. Do a defrag.

4. Reboot.

5. Make sure the only peripherals connected are the keyboard, monitor
and mouse. No cameras. No printers, etc.

6. Open the CDROM.

7. Insert the SP2 CD

8. Follow directions.

Do 1 - 4 again.

Done.
