Windows XP SP2 machine won't recover from hibernation and won't wakeon schedule

Rather, when I tried to wake it this morning, it hung with the monitors
in power saving mode. The computer is in my bedroom and makes a lot of
noise -- even in stand-by. So I use hibernation as that actually shuts
off the fans. A scheduled item starts WMP 11 to serve as an alarm
clock. The file it plays is NOT on a network or removable drive. (All
drives are local.)

It has done one or the other several times in the past several days.
The task I mentioned has not started in that time. I have verified the
time, that the task is enabled, and can wake the computer.

Any suggestions?

BTW: I am worried that more important tasks are not running. I don't
know enough about XP to test for that.
