Windows XP SP2 hangs just after the splash (loading) screen.

Hello. I'm having an issue that I just can't figure out. Today I tried
to install Internet Explorer 7 Beta 3 and it had trouble writing
registry values so it didn't complete the installation. I did what the
Microsoft KB suggested for this and tried to give permissions for it to
add registry values. So after I did that, I tried it again and it still
said it was unsuccessful so I pressed the "restart" button on the IE 7
Beta 3 dialog and it wouldn't restart my comp nor could I get my comp
to restart in any appropriate way so I hit the power button. After I
restarted, and it got to just after the splash screen, it froze on the
blue screen with the windows logo. No accounts are visible or anything.
After a few times of restarting, I got an error that said it couldn't
read from "c:\windows\system32\config\system" so I followed Microsoft's
KB on how to repair that in the Recovery Console and that seems to have
fixed that error, however it still hangs on that blue screen. The only
thing I can do is press Alt-Tab and see two processes labeled "log on
to windows" and "windows logon."

I've tried going into safe mode and it does the same thing. I've also
tried "Last known good..." and that also doesn't fix it.

So I guess the obvious question is: Does anyone know how I can fix this
without doing anything too drastic?

How is that suppose to work when it requires the Windows GUI to work. I
can't even get in my comp. And on top of that, my copy of Windows is
legit so there's no reason I'd be blocked out or something.

Any other ideas?

I also noticed that when I start it in Safe Mode, it briefly displays
the Safe Mode desktop before going back to the blue screen and staying
there, where I can do nothing.

I couldn't really find an answer anywhere so I slipstreamed SP2 in with
my OEM XP disk and that allowed me to do a Repair install, so I'm up
and running now.
