Windows firewall is of basic type and designed to protect the system during
first connection to the internet..
Do a search on 'Personal Firewalls'.. you should see sites for Sygate,
Kerio, Zonealarm and others.. free firewalls work ok.. you do not have to
pay, BUT if you do choose the paid versions, generally they are more
configurable.. best is to use the free versions and see how you get along
with them..
NAT (Network Address Translation) routers (used for broadband connections)
will do the same as SP2 firewall for the most part.. I would still
personally advise use of a software firewall.. behind a NAT router, a
software firewall will appear to take no hits, but will advise if anything
tries to access the internet from within your machine..
Anybody reading this PLEASE NOTE.. I do not intend to enter into yet another
argument re. whether NAT routers are enough protection.. I do not think that
they are, and I reserve the right to hold the opinion..
