i downloaded service pack 1a from the microsoft support
center. when i tried to install the service pack i get
the following message after all of the files are
unpacked: "service pack 1 cannot update a checked (debug)
system with a free (retail) version of service pack1, or
visa versa"

any hints or ideas ? i checked the knowlodege base but
no luck

Could you please run "winver" from the Start->Run box and
post the contents?

How did you install XP originally, and do you know what
version was installed?
 
If yours is not an original version of Windows XP,
Service pack will not work. Microsoft warns you before
installing. I did not install it because my version of
Windows XP is illegal. I am not an expert but i think
you will have to install Windows XP again.
