Windows xp sp1 Incompatible

I've downloaded all the updates and the only one left that keeps coming up
is the SP1 Update and the error messages is...
Windows XP SP1 is incompatible with this version of windows, Contact
Microsoft. and then after I cancel out of it then it says it's updated.
Any ideas

Any chance the people you bought your machine from used a
pirated version of Windows?

I know SP1 has detection for certain CD key numbers that
were floating around the Internet. When it detects these
CD keys, it throws a similar incompatibility message.

I'm not saying that's the only thing that can cause the
problem you're experiencing. That's just the first one
that comes to mind.

this error message usually means that your copy of XP is pirated. SP1
looks for known illegal copies of XP Corporate Edition and refuses to
update them.

It sounds as if you're running one of the pre-release versions of
WinXP; either a beta or Release Candidate version. Naturally, SP1
cannot be applied to these (just as it cannot be applied to some
pirated copies). What is the full version/build number displayed when
you click Start > Run > Winver.exe?
