Critical Downloads won't work

When I check for Windows XP downloads, the computer keeps
selecting 43 critical downloads, the first of which is
the XP SP1 Service Pack. After downloading the Service
Pack I get the message:

Windows XP SP1 is incompatible with this version of
Windows. For more information, contact Microsoft.

Why would the computer select an update that is
incompatible with my computer and how can I get
appropriate updates?

Thanks for any advice.

Was your operating system installed prior to you buying
your computer? Do you have the Windows XP cd? If this is
an illegal copy of Windows XP it will not let you install
the Service pack
