I have the same problem. I will download the developers version with a hope I
can install SP2. WU is particularly unhelpful as the only message I get is
....failed! I have never had any problem with other XP updates and I am fully
up to date on all other patches.

Thanks. I have read through those and haven't found anything that I haven't
tried, cleaned or re-installed. This install of XP is only a couple of weeks
old. The Developer's download failed too - "The system cannot find the file
specified" which is a bit more of a clue...but what file??

anyone

Most of the SP-2 sites do not have a suggestion for those who have tried
both automatic installation and the CD with horrible results except to
uninstall. I attempted installation 3 times, with image backups of course,
and every time my system failed, the task bar disappeared, loading was
extremely slow, and no applications worked correctly after installing SP-2.

Then I slipstreamed my WinXP Pro CD and did a repair installation. Eureka!
All is well. It is just possible the 5% or so who are having bad results
have something wrong with their system or have made some modification that
SP-2 doesn't get along with. The best part of all this is it appears not a
single setting was lost and computing life continues on.

An occasional repair installation of a long running system should become
part of your routine? Adding and removing software may just take some things
out that should be there.

Yes you can. It is exactly what comes on the CD. The description is
aimed at discouraging people who only need it for one machine - so they
get the smaller customised Update, and thus reduce load on the servers
