Windows XP Service Pack 2 Problem

Guest

I have just installed the Windows XP SP2 update and now my computer is
rebooting itself without any reason when the XP picture shows up at start up.
Any ideas?

I am running an Athlon 64-3500 with Asus A7V m/board, 1Gb RAM, ATI 9600 AIW
128 mb Video.

1. How to use the Automatic Recovery feature to recover your computer if
the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup program is not completed successfully:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=875355

2. Reboot tapping F8 each second.
Select "Last known good configuration" at the menu.
If that fails, reboot tapping F8 again this time choosing Safe Mode.
Then System Restore to Date/Time before issue started:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore

3. Otherwise perform a Repair Installation:

4. When you are ready for SP-2, follow the Service Pack Installation
Checklist:

The answer is in http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm . You can
search that document for Athlon 64 or DEP.

I just went through the same problem and it was the IDE cable (40 pin) SP2
likes a 80 pin cable to allow for higher DMA settings.

Turn on the computer and start tapping the F8 key rapidly just as soon
as the first information of any kind shows on the screen. Keep
tapping until the Windows XP Startup Menu appears.

First choose the "disable restart on failure" item from the menu.
Then choose normal startup.

You will probably get a "Blue Screen Of Death" STOP error message. If
so then the contents of the error message, including all of the
parameters, will be a direct clue as to the underlying cause of the
problem. Post that information back here and we can then help you to
resolve the problem.

Good luck
